The Pazo de San Mauro estate dates back to 1591, when the “pazo” mansion was built by the Pereira de Castro family, descended from King Sancho I of Portugal. It is considered one of Europe’s oldest wineries with a continuous connection to viticulture. The modern winery was founded in 1988 and has been owned by the Grupo Marqués de Vargas since 2003. It is located in the Rías Baixas region of Galicia, in the Condado do Tea sub-region. The 30-hectare vineyards stretch across slopes descending toward the Miño River, creating a natural “amphitheater.” The soils are granitic, sandy, and gravelly, and the climate is influenced by the Atlantic.
