The Argyros Estate was founded in 1903 in the Bishopric of Santorini. It is the largest privately owned vineyard in Santorini and current holdings exceed 120 acres, a huge investment of four generations. They work almost exclusively with old vines because only these vineyards can provide the depth, definition and concentration needed to produce the desired style of wine. The vines are grown organically, without the use of pesticides. All work in the vineyard is done manually, except for ploughing, which is done by mules. The non-irrigated vineyards are from 70 to over 200 years old and are from top areas of the island, mainly Messaria, Karterado, Pyrgos, Megalochori and Akrotiri. Their philosophy is to produce wines based only on the indigenous varieties of Santorini, such as Assyrtiko, Aedani and Mavrotragano.
