Achaia Clauss is the oldest winery in Greece. It is located on the homonymous hill in Petroto of Patras and was founded in 1861, by the Bavarian Gustav Clauss. Almost 60 years later, Achaia Clauss passed into Greek hands. In the courtyard of the castle of Achaia Clauss thrives the slope of the vineyards that produce the Castro Clauss range. The particular microclimate and the sandy, rich soils bring balance to the vegetation and production, resulting in the emergence of superior quality products. With total respect for the fruit, the harvest is carried out manually and takes place at night. The grapes are transported by Chilia, the horse of the estate, to the small winery where the winemaking process begins immediately, which is done by reviving the old methods with minimal intervention, but with a modern oenological approach. In the absence of electricity, small oak winemakers and a wooden manual press are used. The new wines are put into oak barrels, if they are to age, while the rest are bottled unfiltered, without stabilization treatment.
