The legendary Montevertine estate in Radda in Chianti at an altitude of 425 metres, began as the holiday home of the tycoon Sergio Manetti in 1967. Quickly discovering the area’s potential for viticulture, his wines proved so successful that Sergio quickly gave up his career to become a full-time wine producer. Only the traditional varieties of the Chianti region are grown in Montevertine’s vineyards: Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Le Pergole was first produced in 1977 and was the first pure Sangiovese to be vinified in the region. The grapes come from the oldest vineyards on the estate, planted between 1968 and 1999. It is matured for one year in Allier barrels and one year in Slavonian oak barrels.
